Dr. Hartmut Michel has successfully obtained the first crystal structure of an integral membrane protein, the crystal of the photosynthetic reaction center of purple photosynthetic bacteria, and determined the three-dimensional structure of the reaction center with a high accuracy of 3 angstroms.

In 1986, he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, which is the highest honour awarded in German research. In 1988, he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. In 1989, he received the Bijvoet Medal at the Bijvoet Center for Biomolecular Research of Utrecht University. Other prizes include the American Physical Society Prize in Biophysics (shared with Deisenhofer), the European Society of Optical Biology Medal, et al.
